KS3 Geography

Course Content

The National Curriculum for Key Stage Three incorporates 4 strands:

Year 7 Units

Where Are We?, Weather and Climate, Rivers, Settlement and Floods.

Year 8 Units

Economic Activity, Agriculture, Tourism in Kenya, Environmental Issues and Energy.

Year 9 Units

Volcanoes and Earthquakes, Trade and Development, Coasts and Population

GCSE Geography

Coursework - 25%

Written Examination - 75%

This course has three main parts that you would study.

These are:

The Skills element involves map reading and practising a range of methods an techniques used to analyse and present information such as various types of graphs and photographs. The Physical Geography part of the course involves studying three topics: Tectonic Activity (plates, volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunamis), Rivers and Coasts. The Human Geography part of the course also consists of three topics which are Settlement, Industry and Managing Resources, which includes tourism. ICT is increasingly used for research and presenting information.

Home Learning:

You will support your College work by completing a range of additional activities and tasks at home. This will also involve keeping up with current events related to the course by reading newspapers and watching relevant programmes. You will use some home learning time to complete your coursework project and to study materials in preparation for assessments and examinations.

Coursework requirements:

You will complete a single research project based on the development of Rye and its land use, which involves doing fieldwork in the local area. This will be carried out during the summer of Year 10 and completed in Year 11. After preparatory work in College, you will carry out your own fieldwork and complete the project both in College and as part of your home learning.

Possible careers:

Students wishing to work in industry or occupations related to the environment will find this course useful and of interest. The subject is also suitable for anyone interested in understanding the physical world and how it affects our everyday lives. There are a variety of courses available for people wishing to continue studying this subject at a higher level ranging from Advanced level to degree and post-graduate level
