This course includes the topics covered by traditional Sociology courses. You would begin by learning how research is carried out and then go on to cover topics such as the Family, Social Stratification, Poverty and the Welfare State, Population, Crime and Deviance, Education, Work and Leisure and Politics. ICT is increasingly used for research and presenting information.
You would support your College work by completing a range of additional activities and tasks. These will involve you in keeping up to date with current events by reading newspapers and watching current affairs programmes. You will also spend time completing your coursework project and studying materials in preparation for assessments and examinations.
You would complete a research project of up to 2500 words. After carrying out preparatory work in College, you would complete most this project as part of your home learning.
This course provides an excellent foundation if you are thinking of following a career which involves working with people. This will range from the caring professions and public services through to working in retailing or the leisure industries. There are also a wide variety of related courses that you could follow at a higher level. These might be in Sociology or related areas such as Health and Social Care.
