Exam Board: AQA

This GCSE course will enable you to start a new language and take a fast-track course to GCSE over Key Stage 4.  Learning Spanish will give you the communication skills and understanding to travel in Spanish-speaking countries or work in an International environment.  Many students find that learning French in Key Stage 3 has helped them to learn Spanish more easily. Those hoping to work abroad or in international companies may find that choosing two language GCSEs is a distinct advantage.

The course is taught in topic areas and will build your vocabulary and grammar knowledge, along with skills in Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.  All these skills are assessed in separate exams, with the option of taking Foundation (G-C) or Higher (D-A*) Tier in each skill.  Teaching resources include video, audio and written materials, and work includes ICT use, and speech recording.  We hope to establish a link with a school in Spain, and will also work with larger Spanish departments in other schools.

Home Learning :

Every week you will have to learn new vocabulary and grammar, write letters or stories in Spanish, and complete reading tasks.

Coursework Requirements :

Each term you will complete writing work based on the unit topic. Your best three pieces will be submitted to the exam board as writing coursework. This will count for 25% of your GCSE.

Possible Careers :

Language skills are useful in many careers nowadays, including travel and tourism, finance, business and banking, hospitality, catering and leisure.  In addition, some universities now require a GCSE pass in a language.
