Exam Board: EDEXCEL

It’s now time to choose your options. This is an important decision to make and could be very influential in helping you make a choice about what to do at the end of Year 11. Hopefully you will continue your education at college because it’s good to keep learning.

The GCSE Music course is an exciting opportunity for you to explore the different styles of music all under three main headings that include:

Composing:

For this you will be expected to produce a minimum of TWO compositions to submit as coursework…but this is easy because you will get lots of practice!

Performance:

For this you will be expected to perform both as a solo performer and as part of a group for examination assessment…but this is easy because you will get lots of practice!

Historical Analysis:

For this you will explore FOUR different - and what we call - ‘Areas of Study’ ranging from traditional orchestral music to contemporary music to popular/rock music to world music…but this is easy because you will get lots of help!

Home Learning:

Some students think Home Learning is a bit of a drag particularly at GCSE because there are a million more things to do then when you were in Year 9…BUT…if  you want to get on and be successful it is important that you complete regular Home Learning tasks ok? These are enjoyable tasks and have different levels so if you find it a little hard then try Level 1.

Want a challenge? Then try Level 2. Ok, then, fancy a REAL challenge? Then try Level 3!! Tasks will include composing and music theory work. Don’t worry about this, everything is made clear and easy to understand.

Coursework Requirements:

Ok then in a nutshell so what are you expected to complete?

Two compositions.

What can you do with music after year 11?

Simple. Lots of things!

There are many opportunities open to students with a good GCSE music grade. If you like you can continue studying music at college such as Hasting College or Bexhill – where we have many Thomas Peacocke students doing music at the moment! Many have then continued on to the Brighton Institute for Modern Music [BIMMS] where you’re taught about Song-writing as well as music industry skills such as Music Management, Record Companies and Record Production. If, on the other hand, you prefer to study music at ‘A’ Level then Lewes College is excellent…and we have many Thomas Peacocke students there too! Once you’ve finished at College you can then choose your own specialised career in music. You might like be a music teacher so you will need to do a music degree for three years at a University and then a teaching qualification…OR…you might want to be a performer in an orchestra and travel the world…OR…you might want to work at a record company and be the next Simon Cowell…OR…you might want to form a band and become an international superstar. Who knows? Only you do!
